While historically surviving on the fringes of society, exclusion and disdain of the "Gypsies" has been fervent throughout their thousand-year presence in Europe. In the wake of recent request for asylum by Roma families to countries of more tolerable human rights policies, the Hungarian government and its officials are faced with the paradoxical elements of age-old tradition and its modern, socio-political interpretations which; so far has proven to be an exercise in futility.<br />
